I know a lot of you guys are film makers, hobbyists or aspiring directors, so this little piece of info about the use of H.264 and the legal use of its license might interest you.
From this article: A lot of commercial software comes with H.264 encoders and decoders, and some computers arrive with this software preinstalled. This leads a lot of people to believe that they can legally view and create H.264 videos for whatever purpose they like. Unfortunately for them, it ain’t so.
In the last while H.264 has become standard use for web video, the way DivX was a few years ago, and I'm sure there will be something new in the codec world in the next 2 years that will replace this, as is pointed out in this Slashdot article, but I thought you still might like to know the implications of encoding your video with H.264 for now.
Via ESPN: When EA Sports community manager Alain Quinto tweeted back in December that EA execs were preparing to announce a new game, the rumors and speculation spiraled out of control. Was EA going to steal the WWE license from THQ? Is "MVP Baseball" coming back? Is a new sport like lacrosse finally going to break through with an NCAA-licensed game? To make it simple, no, no and no.Instead, sources confirmed to ESPN that the new title is actually one of the all-time classics coming back to consoles as EA Sports has acquired the rights from the NBA to deliver an updated version of "NBA Jam" that will ship to retail exclusively for the Wii.
Check out the full article on ESPN for some secret info on the oldschool Jam, like why the Pistons beat the Bulls usually, or listen to me get burned over NBA Jam vs NBA Jam:TE on a Nerdballoon podcast.
Very cool background on Valve, mostly about how it was founded and the development of Half Life in conjunction with distributor Sierra On-line. Best quote: "A game can be late for a while, but it will suck forever".
The title says it all. Starting today, for the next 5 days, the Steam Store is placing games on sale for 1 day at a time. When the Steam Store has a sale it's usually decent, so I suggest checking it out. Today some of the games on sale include Left 4 Dead 2, KoTOR, Dead Space and the whole THQ pack.
